SSAJ Winter Trip 2014

SSAJ Winter Trip 2014

2014 Events, Announcements
So after two days of broken spectacles, face injuries and a lot of truth-or-dare in the evening, the SSAJ's winter trip came to an end on the evening of the 20th of December. We first set off from Shinjuku on the cold winter morning of the 19th and reached the ski-resort at Sugadaira-koen around noon. After that it was simply two days for skiing/snowboarding for those who knew how to and finding one's feet literally for those who didn't. Many of our members did manage to at least learn how to basically ski/snowboard after the two days though. Plus, the very fact that it was real natural snow (very important for Singaporeans!) was a big plus. But the most important thing was that we had great fun falling down and…

Momiji-gari

Momiji-gari

2014 Events, Announcements
During Autumn in Japan, what else comes to mind but beautiful red leaves basking in cool weather under the warm sun? We had our annual Momiji-gari 紅葉狩り or red-leaves hunting on 16 November 2014 at Oku-tama! The weather was perfect: blue sky and warm sun at a cool 15 degrees. We took a train down from Shinjuku, and another train that actually splits half it's carriages one way and the other half in another during the journey there. The red-leaves were in full bloom as you might say, with many trees brandishing the full colours of autumn with shades of yellow, red and a deep crimson. Some of us also braved our taste-buds by trying Oku-tama's signature wasabi ice cream! The day ended off with a…

Deepavali Prata Praty

Deepavali Prata Praty

2014 Events, Announcements
In the spirit of Deepavali and with the increase in the number of Singaporean Indian students in the SSAJ, SSAJ hosted its first Deepavali gathering, which we christened 'Prata Praty', and no that is not a mistype!   As the name of the party would suggest, we indulged in one of our signature Singaporean Indian dishes, Roti Prata! Unfortunately, our lack of Indian culinary skill did not allow us to make the prata from scratch, so we used frozen pratas that we managed to find in at a local Indian shop. However, we successfully made Indian curry from scratch with our own recipe! Looks fantastic doesn't it? Our lovely ladies also whipped up some mango lassi,  which was surprisingly simple to make and tasted very refreshing and went excellently with…

ASEAN Festival

ASEAN Festival

2014 Events, Announcements
On 11 October 2014, The ASEAN festival was held at Hollywood University in Roppongi. Student groups from 10 nations under ASEAN all congregated and worked together in order to create this spectacular event for everyone to come enjoy and experience the tip of the surface of what it's like to be part of the ASEAN community. As SSAJ, we served one of our signature Singaporean dishes Chili Crab with noodles, sponsored by Prima Deli!   How we did it: The venue did not allow us to cook the noodles/have any grills and had many other constrictions. So... What we did was to 1. Cook all the noodles and taogay on the morning of the festival at Bryan's dormitory 2. Put all the noodles and taogay and other cut vegetables and…

Mid Autumn Festival

Mid Autumn Festival

2014 Events, Announcements
Mooncakes! On the 20th of September, SSAJ had our Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations! We know that we were a bit late compared to the actual date but hey, we just need an excuse to come together. We had quite a lot of new faces who just came to Japan within the preceding weeks so we originally had a bit of trouble meeting. We all remember the days when we didn't know where Hachiko is don't we? But in the end things were fine! We first went to have delicious Korean food before heading off to Komaba park for lanterns, sparklers and mooncakes. Given the number of new people who came, we were talking about some basic things and giving advice about living in Japan. The event also allowed some people to…

Fireworks Festival 花火大会

Fireworks Festival 花火大会

2014 Events
On the sunny afternoon of 2nd August, roti prata and home-made curry sat unmoving under a cloudless sky. Even as birds sang, trees rustled, and children played, they were still as stone on blue tarpaulin, unnerved at the cruel fate they were soon to meet. By the time our investigators arrived at the scene of the crime at 1906 hours, all that was left were a handful of crumbs and suspiciously large orange stainsin the evening sky. It was soon determined that a ring of Singaporeans was responsible for the gruesome crime. “But they tasted good!” exclaimed Raphael Ong, 24. When pressed for further details, he pointed skyward. “Don’t bother me, I want to watch the fireworks.” Similar sentiments were shared by Su Xinle, 21. “The fireworks are so pretty!…

Don’t Merlion Party

Don’t Merlion Party

2014 Events, Announcements
On June 22, SSAJ held it's first event the new committee, the "Don't Merlion Party". Although I was not able to join the first half of the event (karaoke), 8 people managed to attend, abuse and enjoy the unlimited flow of free drinks because we are Singaporean and have fun singing songs from anime, AKB48 and enka (courtesy of our beloved president) because we are in Japan after all. After that, we proceeded for dinner in Shinjuku at Tenkuu no Shizuku, and were joined by 10 more people, including 5 guests from Yale NUS! While according to many, there wasn't enough food, I believe that the fact that we were able to meet up as in Singaporean group in the busiest city in the world, tell newcomers about our experiences…

Hanami 2014

Hanami 2014

2014 Events, Announcements
SSAJ conducted its hanami at Yoyogi Park, Tokyo on April 6th. We thank the weather (well not for the later half) for allowing us to conduct the event. Grabbing a spot was easier than expected. At 7am-ish, I somehow managed to get a spot close to a tree that was still at full bloom, and was quickly joined by Cao Lei, Shu Shien and Liang Cheng. At the end of the day, the early bird catches the worm. By noon, most members gathered and some simple self-introduction (自己紹介 jiko-shoukai) started the talking, eating and drinking. We consider ourselves lucky to still have the sakuras blooming (it was already past the supposed full bloom (満開 mankai) day), and enjoyed the flower-viewing thoroughly. Furthermore, the strong winds brought about really huge sakura…
