Winter Trip 2013: Kanazawa

2013 Events, Announcements
[gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="4" orderby="title"] For this year’s version of the winter retreat, SSAJ members visited Kanazawa (金沢市), the capital city of Ishikawa (石川県), one of the snowy prefectures of the Hokuriku (北陸) region. Unlucky for us we were only treated to a little snow (and some rain instead), but nonetheless had a great time enjoying every single portion of Kanazawa we have visited. We started Day 1 with Kenroku-en (兼六園), one of the three most famous gardens in Japan (the other two being Koraku-en of Okayama, and Kairaku-en of Ibaraki). After a short stroll, and a stroll across the road (peppered with many stops to try the local snacks available... yum yum!), we reached Kanazawa Castle (金沢城)and enjoyed the its magnificence and beauty. Incidentally, Kenroku-en was once the castle’s…

Momijigari 2013

2013 Events, Announcements
Momijigari 2013 Last Sunday on 17 November, we met at Shinjuku station early in the morning at 8am and went to Mt Mitake for only yearly Momijigari. It has a long train ride to Mt Mitake but the scenery there was definitely worth the time spent. This time, we were divided into two groups, the rafting group and the hiking group. The hiking was not so much of hiking but we had lots of fun taking pictures of the red leaves and climbing up rocks taking random photos. Some of us even bought yuzu and kaki along the way as it was really interesting how they sold them. [gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="5" orderby="title"] We didn't managed to go for the sake tour but I guess most of us got to…

Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration 2013

2013 Events
[gallery] Photo credits: Nam Liang Cheng With one of the best turnouts ever, Mid-Autumn Festival Celebrations 2013 saw the introduction of many students who arrived in Japan recently via the Autumn intake. And not forgetting, the gathering of many friends who have not seen each other in a long time. That night, SSAJ gathered at Doma-Doma and enjoyed dinner and drinks and did a round of self-introductions. Thanks to the self-introductions, we now know who are our fellow manga, anime, drama, music, sports (and others) aficionados, so next time whenever anyone of you would like to hold an event, you know who to invite! =) After dinner, we moved over to Ueno Park where we welcomed more SSAJ members who were unable to join us for the dinner. There, we had mooncakes (yay!) and…

SSAJ goes to the 38th Edogawa Fireworks Festival!

2013 Events
Summer! Natsu-yasumi! Hanabi*! Along with other SSAJ members, I got to participate in this year's Edogawa fireworks festival, kindly organized by Cao Lei, VP 2, and we were treated to one of the most amazing displays of pyrotechnics in the skies for this summer! Photo credits: Ernest See Edogawa recorded 1.4 million attendees this year. That's a 7-digit attendance rate, with one entire stretch of Edogawa coastline being filled by scores and scores of people. But SSAJ, being smart as ever, weaved past the insanity to be right in front to catch the biggest fireworks ever. Sumidagawa, the other popular firework festival, was washed out for the first time in 36 years. We suspect that explains the good company we had for the night. Photo credits: Nam Liang Cheng and…

8th ASEAN Festival

2013 Events
Last week, 20 July, SSAJ Exco and some volunteers set up a booth at Hollywood University, Roppongi to represent Singapore at the 8th ASEAN Festival. We sold chicken rice, lime juice and pineapple tarts, performed and did a mini fashion show showcasing the Singaporean culture! We started off the day really early by preparing the materials for the chicken rice and lime juice while also rehearsing for the performance and decorating the booth. At the end of the day, though most of us were tired and still had to prepare for our exams/reports,we had lots of fun!! Well, a picture speaks more than a thousand words, and here we have more than tens of thousands of words for you, so please take a look through all of them! Our booth!…

June Meet-Up on 8 June

2013 Events
Last saturday, 8th June 2013, SSAJ gathered in Yoyogi for a relaxing afternoon of games followed by drinks and food. Part 1 was frisbee and board games in Yoyogi park. Though Tokyo has entered the hot and humid "Tsuyu" rainy season, we were blessed with plenty of sunshine and cool breeze as we played games and snacked on Singaporean favorites kindly contributed by SSAJ members. Part 2 was at Wara Wara @ JR Yoyogi Station. Having one's nights out at a Japanese izakaya is common fare for the Japanese. SSAJ did its version as well, and it was a great success! Aside from the food and drinks, loads of Karaoke songs were enjoyed over the course of 2 hours. From the lovely duets by Jason Mraz, to the powerful Enka-styled…
